Immaculate Conception Church Interior

This 15 x 22" watercolor is a quiet, reverent meditation on the interior of my lifelong parish, Immaculate Conception Church in Newburyport, MA . Painted with a limited, luminous palette, the work attempts to capture the soaring Gothic arches and softly glowing marble, where light filters gently through the space and settles on the high altar and crucifix above.
Rather than sharp detail, I’ve attempted to show the figures of the daily parishioners with loose, expressive washes, their forms merging into one another as if united by shared prayer. This intentional softness allows the viewer to feel the hush of the church interior—the stillness and reverence during the line to receive the Eucharist and the sense of time suspended within familiar, sacred walls.
The watercolor medium enhances the spiritual atmosphere: transparent layers of warm golds, cool greens, and muted violets dissolve edges and create a sense of memory rather than documentation. The architecture rises protectively over the congregation, conveying both the grandeur of the church and the intimacy of a place deeply known and loved over a lifetime.
