Monhegan Light at Night

In this 15 × 22-inch watercolor, I set out to capture a very different side of this remarkable island. Rather than the familiar sunlit coastal scenes, I wanted to explore the mystery of the harbor at night, where scattered lights illuminate the buildings and shimmer across the dark water.
The wonderful Island Inn glows on the right, the lighthouse stands watch on the distant hillside to the upper left, and the dock occupies the center of the composition. Beyond these points of light, the island dissolves into deep purples, muted grays, and the darkness of the surrounding landscape.
For me, the challenge was to make the light feel luminous against the dark—not simply by painting the lights themselves, but by using the relationships between light, shadow, color, and reflection.
