I have to admit that I enjoy painting directly from life in the studio. This small oil tries to capture the vitality of a fresh floral arrangement observed in real time. The brushwork results from a lively interplay of color which gives the bouquet a sense of movement and presence, while the loose handling preserves the immediacy of the work. The rose, crimson, and cool blues emerge from a softly keyed background, allowing the flowers to bounce the light and atmosphere rather than simply rigid detail.

Created as a working study, the painting reveals my process—which is first decisive marks, then layered color, and hopefully an honest response to what I saw without being overworked or corrected. It is an intimate piece, meant to be enjoyed up close, where the texture of the paint and the rhythm of the brushstrokes can be fully appreciated.
