There are rows of cultivated flowers at Tendercrop Farm in Newbury, MA. I thought I might attempt to put the beauty of those flowers and their strong colors down in a painting.
Not knowing what would happen, I asked for permission to set up my easel in amongst the rows of flowers.
I was not alone. There were a couple of hard-working flower pickers. I approached one of them cautiously, and he was very friendly. I mistakenly thought he would be as hot and uncomfortable as I had become, standing at my easel in the direct sun. On the contrary, he was listening to something close to opera and transcending the hard labor. I have found that where my focus goes, the energy flows - regardless of any discomfort.
There are two figures in the painting and he’s the figure on the left. It’s a challenge rendering that many flowers including the background barn and most importantly - I think - the atmosphere of being there. I did a smaller study and then I executed this 15 x 22“ watercolor.
I hope you like it. Richard Burke Jones.
