The Washing House Clothes Line — Day One on Monhegan

Day one on Monhegan Island, and this is where the trip began — a weathered washing house, a length of wire strung with laundry pins, and a single piece of blue cloth catching the light against all that faded clapboard.

There's something about a first-day painting that sets the tone for everything after it. No big vista, no dramatic view — just an old building, strong shadows, and one small note of color doing all the work. The wire and its tangle of pins became almost as important as the cloth itself, cutting across the composition and giving the whole thing a sense of age and use.

I liked the challenge of it: a limited, quiet palette, strong darks against sun-bleached white, and just that single patch of teal to carry the eye through the piece. Sometimes the simplest, most overlooked corner of a place ends up being the best way in.
