🍂 Can I Capture the Magic of Autumn in Newburyport? | Plein Air Oil Painting
Three afternoons, one historic New England street, and the challenge of capturing the fleeting light and color of autumn.
I painted this 12 × 16-inch oil on linen board on location in downtown Newburyport, Massachusetts, looking along the historic streets toward the church steeple.
What attracted me to this scene was the interplay of warm brick buildings, autumn foliage, colorful storefronts, and the cool blue-violet shadows stretching across the pavement. The people moving through the street added another layer of life and movement.
Working on location over three afternoons gave me the opportunity to develop the composition while responding to the changing light. I wanted to simplify the architecture, use broad and expressive brushstrokes, and let the warm and cool colors do much of the work rather than describe every detail.
For me, painting a familiar place is not simply about recording what I see. It's about discovering the character of the place through light, color, and paint.
I hope you enjoy seeing this Newburyport street scene come together!
