When Autumn Takes Over State Street! | Plein Air Oil Painting

Painting Autumn on State Street | Newburyport, Massachusetts

There are few places more beautiful in autumn than State Street in historic Newburyport, Massachusetts.

For this oil painting, I set up my easel right on location, surrounded by the bustling sidewalks, outdoor cafés, historic storefronts, and brilliant autumn foliage.

But as the painting developed, I found myself moving beyond the actual colors of the scene. The golden leaves became more intense, the shadows turned toward rich violets and blues, and the entire street seemed to come alive with color and movement.

For me, plein air painting is not simply about recording what is in front of us. It's about capturing what we feel when we experience a place.

I wanted this painting to convey the excitement, warmth, and visual beauty of an autumn afternoon in Newburyport.

I hope you enjoy watching my interpretation of this wonderful New England street.  12 x 16" oil on linen board
